Clear past items from the notification area
Not only the current icons displayed, but also every single past icon that has been in the notification area. To get rid of these past items requires editing the registry as follows:
Before making changes to the registry it is recommended that you take the time to make a backup copy of your registry.
Click the Start button, in the search field type regedit.exe and press enter.
Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify
Delete the following registry key values IconStreams and PastIconStream
Now right click on the taskbar and selecting Task Manager from the menu. In the Task Manager window click the Processes tab. Click Explorer.exe and then click End Process. Next go to the Application tab and click New Task. In the Create New Task dialog box type: explorer.exe.
Finally click OK
