How to open PowerPoint files in Windows Mail

When you try to open a .PPS file that came as an attachment in Windows Mail, you get the following error:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.
Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.

This happens even though you have PowerPoint Viewer installed. However, you are able to open the file when you save it to disk. This problem does not occur if you have Microsoft Office or PowerPoint installed.

To resolve the issue, follow these steps:

  • Click Start, type regedit.exe in the search box and press <Enter>
  • Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPointViewer.SlideShow.11\shell\Show

  • Right-click Show and click Rename
  • Replace Show with Open
  • If you have PowerPoint Viewer 2007 installed,  repeat the steps above for the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPointViewer.SlideShow.12\shell\Show

  • Close the Registry Editor
